THE HOTEL & TOURISM SECTOR OF BANGLADESH
The hospitality sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in Bangladesh; hence it is marked by intense competition. Under this backdrop the stand alone hotels has to sustain and grow amidst of big hotel chains both nationally and internationally. Implementing traditional marketing strategies which focus on acquisition does not serve the purpose of withstanding this competition. Hence more emphasis is on retaining the customer rather than finding the new ones is the need of the hour. In order to achieve these hotels must develop innovative and competitive marketing strategies which seek new ways to acquire, retain and increase customers thereby sustaining and developing in this competitive era.
Presence of renting space for the travelers can be traced back to antiquity. Today hospitality industry is a multibillion dollar industry which is a fastest growing industry not only in Bangladesh but throughout the world. This service sector is one of the biggest industries of the Bangladesh economy because it includes multiple service components like food service, tourism and hotels. When we consider the hotel segment we find the restaurants, lodging, transportation, cruise line, theme parks, events and many more. The hotels provide various services varying from super deluxe category to budget category to its different categories of clients. However it is not the hotels alone who earn the share but also the tour operators, travel agencies, transportation etc. are directly or indirectly benefitted from the hotels.
Providing rooms and banquet halls, restaurants, telephone call services, laundry services, travel services and internet services are the areas from where the revenue is generated for the hotels. The hotel industry is marked by intense competition. The price of the hotels depends upon the service and amenities provided. The hotels are classified as budget hotels, economy hotels, residential hotels, resort hotels, suite or all suite hotels, commercial hotels, conference centers, airport hotels, business hotels, casino hotels, luxury hotels, heritage hotels etc. The consumer segment in the hotel market is divided as business traveler, leisure traveler, and airline cabin crew.
In Bangladesh the hotels are classified on the basis of general features and facilities offered, hence they are classified as five star, four star, three star, two star, one star and heritage hotels. These are the classification given by Ministry of Tourism, Government of Bangladesh. Every five years these ratings are put under review. The 5 star hotels are included in the premium and luxury segment, 3 and 4 star hotels are included in the mid market segment, 1 and 2 star hotels are included in the Budget hotels. Heritage hotels are the hotels which are built past, they are the palaces and forts which are now converted into hotels.
Owing to the potential market in Bangladesh many international hotel giants are coming to Bangladesh to capture the market. These hotel chains are entering the Bangladeshi market by establishing joint ventures with the Bangladeshi hotels, or by getting into management contracts or acquiring franchisees. These hotel giants are mainly focusing on the budget segments and tire II cities.
Bangladesh is located in South Asia surrounded by three direction, having borders with Myanmar & India. The only other direction is wide open space having coastal line with the Bay of Bengal. It is one of the heavily dense populated countries in the world. But on the other hand it has a strong economy in South Asia having competed with India. To the south west corner we have the biggest Mangrove Forest & south east we have the longest beach in the world located in Cox’s Bazaar. Cox’s Bazaar is one of the most prominent tourist spot not only in the country but also around the world. It is quite obvious business man both in the country and around the world have keen interest to create this place as a financial zone. As a result more investment both foreign and local is desirable.
Bangladesh offers variety of historically significant and culturally unique sites for tourists. Tourism is one of the most prospective industries from which Bangladesh can earn a huge amount of foreign exchange. Hotel facilities are highly needed to provide accommodation to the satisfaction of the choosing travelers and tourists moving at regular intervals in and around the country on various purposes. To meet the growing need, Govt. has declared construction of commercial building/hotels as service industry. This policy of the Govt. contributes to encouraging private participation in solving the existing and future acute problem of commercial space and modern hotels.
Cox’s Bazaar is bay-side city, a fishing port and district headquarters of Bangladesh. It is known for its wide and long sandy beach, which is considered by many as the world’s longest natural sandy sea beach. The beach in Cox’s Bazaar is a continuous 120 kilometers (75 mi) sandy sea beach with a gentle slope. It is located 152 kilometres (94 mi) south of the industrial port of Chittagong. Cox’s Bazar is also known by the name Panowa, whose literal translation means “yellow flower”. Its other old name was “Palongkee”. Today, Cox’s Bazar is one of the most-visited tourist destinations in Bangladesh. It has yet to become a major international tourist destination, and has no international hotel chains because of the lack of publicity and transportation.
It is about 22 Km south of Cox’s Bazar and a nice place for picnic and shooting. The famous “Broken Hills” and waterfalls are rare sight of this location.
It is about 30Km south of Cox’s Bazar. Innani Beach is a magic spell on those who step into that dreamland. It is an ideal place for sea bathing, picnic, etc. Inani Beach is also famous for Rock and Coral Boulders and its beauty are same as Cox’s Bazar’s. The water of Inani Beach is blue and very clear.
Teknaf is situated on the bank of Naaf river and just at the end of hilly regions of the southern tip of Bangladesh. The most interesting thing like journey on the Naaf river, high hills, green forests, sand beach, etc are really enjoyable for tourists at Teknaf. It is about 90 km far away from Cox’s Bazar and well connected with various kinds of transportation services.
It represents a transitional ground for the fauna of the Indo-Himalayan and Indo-Malayan ecological sub-regions. Important habitats at the site include mangrove, mudflats, beaches and sand dunes, canals and lagoons and marine habitat. Mangrove forest occurs in Teknaf peninsula both as natural forest with planted stands and mostly distributed in the intertidal zone. The Teknaf peninsula mangrove supports the habitat of 161 different fisheries species.

Saint Martin Island:
St. Martin’s Island is a small island in the northeast part of the Bay of Bengal and is about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula, forming the southernmost part of Bangladesh. It is the only coral island in Bangladesh. It is about 8 km west of the northwest coast of Myanmar at the mouth of the Naaf River. The local name of the island is “Narical Gingira”, also spelled “Narikel Janjina/Jinjera”, translated from Bangla, meaning ‘Coconut Island’.
St. Martin’s Island has become a popular tourist spot. Now a days, three shipping liners run daily trips to the island during October-February. They are Kutubdia, Sea-Truck and KearySindbad. Tourists can book their trip either from Chittagong or from Cox’s Bazar. The surrounding coral reef of the island has an extension named Chera Dwip. It is comparable with the island of Caribbean countries. Tourist are encouraged by fresh blue crystal clear water on extended beach and wide-angle sea horizon of Saint Martin.
